Could Apple Shut Down Android in the US?

As we all know, Apple has been involved in patent infringement lawsuits with some of the most popular Android smartphone makers, including HTC, Motorola and Samsung. On Friday, a US International Trade Commission judge ruled that HTC did infringe on two patents that Apple mentioned in its complaint. HTC has appealed against the ruling but it is very likely that the judge’s original ruling will be upheld.

Now, there are three scenarios which are most likely to play out.

iPhone 5 / 4S: the rumor

It's July, there is no new iPhone, and the analysts are restless. This time last year, Apple had already announced and begun shipping the iPhone 4 -- in fact, every single previous model has been announced in June, save for the first, which was unveiled in January 2007. So, now that the month has come and gone and WWDC with it, what are all of the tech publications out there to do? Make with the rumor stories, naturally -- and over the past few weeks, they've been coming fast and furious.

Greatly looking iOS 5 has two glaring omissions

Now that the dust has settled from yesterday's Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, I can safely say iOS 5 will be a huge win for Apple. Playing around with some of the new features such as Notification Center and iCloud on my iPad 2 re-invigorates my excitement for developing for the iOS platform. In many ways iOS 5 has already exceeded expectations- out of my top five wish list last week, Apple knocked three of them out of the park. There were however, two glaring omissions. This is what they are and why they were left on the bench for now.

Apple IR Tech Could Stop You from Recording Concert Videos

Though Amazon, Apple and Google have all rolled out cloud music players this year, Amazon and Google made it to market first by passing up deals with record companies and releasing simple storage solutions for uploaded music. Apple took the time to set up those deals and created iCloud. One of the company’srecently unveiled patents patents seems to build off those relationships with record companies--in designing a system for future iPhones to detect infrared light, Apple has demonstrated a way for concerts and movie theaters to stamp out video recording at live events.

Concertgoers absolutely love to whip out their smart phones, record songs and upload them to YouTube. Apple’s patent could stop that practice by allowing infrared stage lights to shut off the camera of any iPhone picking up the IR beam.
