Best Buy adding new Apple laptop SKUs to its systems, foreshadows MacBook Pro refresh

Best Buy's laptop discovery tool is doing a slightly overzealous job this morning by listing a set of "new SKU" laptops from Apple Computer before said company has had a chance to announce them. This seems to corroborate recent rumors of a MacBook Pro refresh coming next week, as do the $1,199, $1,499, $1,799, and $2,199 price points, all of which are presently occupied by current-gen 13- and 15-inch MBP variants. There is an additional $2,499 sticker for a laptop identified only as "New SKU I," which presumably points to an upgrade to Apple's 17-incher. Regrettably, there's nothing more than the pricing for us to go on, but feel free to fill your time until Best Buy populates its listings with speculation about the hot new processing, storage, and interconnect options Apple might have in store for us.

[Thanks, Michael]

  1. cheaper than New Mexico? Utah? Where it has the highest per capita population of tech degrees? Nevada? Where the real estate market went to shit and there's no state income tax?

Seems like there are some White Hoodies in Intel's ranks. Such a shame.

  2. Interesting that most of these anti-optical drive comments blatantly disregard one of the biggest reasons why Apple would probably support the move: No proprietary disc drive = huge bump in iTunes sales. As for me, I rip a hell of a lot of music from CDs onto my MBP, and I would really hate the idea that that goes away in favor of the idea that I can just buy the albums on iTunes. What if it's a friends band's demo that I want to put on my iTunes? What if it's the bootleg copy of D.R.U.G.S.' new album?

No optical drive included = no go. Maybe down the line, I'll reconsider my stance, but for now, optical drives are still very necessary, just as they should be.

  3. Dude, spent $50 on an external CD drive and get that tin-foil hat off. It will read your bootleg demo just fine. Heck, it will read it from your Windows 7 or Linux running on Macbook under VM just fine.

There is no conspiracy. Nobody needs build-in optical drive anymore.

  5. If you want to get a Macbook Pro cheaper then what best buy offers then visit this site http://freebienetworkz.info/ho... and stop complaining about how expensive Macbooks are when you can get one for pretty much nothing. Good luck.

  6. Why does anyone need rumors about new Macbook pros coming out soon? Apple always refreshes their Macbooks in the Spring (now in Feb since the iPad took over the April slot), the iPad around April, the iPhone in June, and so on.

It's a fairly regular release schedule.

This is like having the news blast countless stories about rumors that President's Day is coming up soon weeks in advance.

    Let. It. Go.

  7. God, I’m so MAD right now, son. What kind of site is this? Some kind of upcoming [TECH PRODUCT], gadgety-news-site thing? Reporting on predictably imminent product refreshes—SHIT, son, hold me back, I can’t BELIE’ ’DAT. ’Bout to go full emo here, I’m ABOUT TO BREAK.

Just kidding. Maybe Engadget isn’t the site for you, chief. Maybe it’s time to just let go.

  8. People get over it.

Fact is: Apple owns 90% of the laptops in the over > $1,000 market
    Thats pretty amazing.

  9. Yep. The whole argument about price is preposterous. Nothing that is "overpriced" would sell in any appreciable quantity.

  10. You know what would be awesome? If Apple made their laptops out of carbon fiber. Then, it would be even lighter(I think) and possibly thinner, and still have that premium quality.
