Acer's already rolled out a few 3D-capable monitors (among other products), but none quite like it's new GN245HQ model, which the company notes is the "first 3D monitor in the world" to support NVIDIA's HDMI 3D solution. That means you'll be able to view 3D content from a connected set-top box or Blu-ray player in addition to a PC connected via DVI-DL, and do so with the included active shutter glasses that work in conjunction with the monitor's built-in IR emitter. As for the monitor itself, you'll get the usual 1920 x 1080 resolution and 120MHz refresh rate, along with a 2ms response time, a pair of built-in 2W speakers, and LED backlighting that uses two lamps instead of four for a promised 68% savings in power consumption. No official word on a US release just yet, but you can look for this one to hit the UK in mid-March for £419.99 (or about $675).

I'm really getting tired of boasting "3D-this" and "3D-that". I need to replace my monitor soon and it's bugging me that with all of these manufacturers out there I can't find a monitor that comes anywhere close to something I've had for over 6 years! Give me my 1920x1200 resolution, >170 degree viewing angle, multiple DVI inputs and most of all an ADJUSTABLE STAND!
ReplyDelete... Or am I just being too picky?
I got a BenQ XL2410T 3D monitor, just for the 120hz refresh rate. It's awesome! I don't care about 3D. Also if it really launches at £420, that's ridiculous as competition is already beating it by more than £100 difference for the same spec!
ReplyDeleteWhy are businesses trying to push 3D so hard? It is still too big of a gimmick right now and needs to be further developed if they want the technology to be adopted on a large scale.
ReplyDeletemoney money money money
ReplyDeleteI'm all for higher resolution, more screen size (30" and above) and response time. Lets drop 3D until its something really worth writing home about. Cheaper prices would be nice too.
ReplyDeleteThis is a special purpose monitor. If you want higher resolution and better response time with a cheaper price there is plenty to choose from. I am not sure what your point is other than "No monitors should be made that don't cater to my specific needs". I agree that the whole 3d thing is a tired gimmick but this monitor was created for a specific purpose and you seem to be missing the point entirely.
ReplyDeleteAnd that also seems to be your pat answer to everyone's opinion.
ReplyDeleteSo what's the specific purpose? I don't read any in that article other than to be "a world first", which is standard company garbage at this point.
120hz with an IR port for shutter glasses.... not to be a jerk, but did you even read the article? I realize my comments so far on this subject seem to be a little curt. I'm not trying to be combative or anything but the whole point of this monitor is that it is 3d capable. No other reason to but it. Personally, I think 3d is a lame marketing gimmick but there are apparently people out there that think it is good. This monitor is for them. No one is going to spend $700 bucks on this monitor unless they are going to be playing games in 3d and watching movies in 3d on it. Yes we all understand that the resolution/screen size/brightness aren't great. That's not the point. This is a 3d capable monitor and can be judged against a 2d display.
ReplyDeleteDoes this at least have height adjustment? I wish more monitors made these days were 'ergo'.
ReplyDeleteThe last thing I want to do with my monitor is shrink the viewable area. Drop the 3d crap and give me 178 degree viewable area, more resolution, and better brightness already. There is a reason Apple monitors are awesome "
ReplyDeleteGo buy an Apple monitor then. This is a special purpose monitor.
"Love the looks. The integrated speakers are a nice bonus. Just wish it had a higher resolution. "
No. The integrated speakers suck. Anyone who intends to play games in 3D or watch movies on this is going to have a decent set of speakers. We don't need speakers on monitors anymore except for office use. This monitor is not for office use. Also, the resolution is exactally where it should be. When you are running 3D with the shutter-glasses at 120hz your video card needs to be pushing 2X the frames than you normally would. Higher resolution would kill your frame rate. Unless of course your system can pump out Crysis at 2560x1600 at 120FPS....
Yes, it is frustrating for the first 10 comments on anything 3d are from Leela, and glasses-free won't help her see in 3d either.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing this is a 24 inch...?
ReplyDelete120MHz refresh rate, huh? Technology moves fast.
ReplyDeleteI was quite surprised as well.
ReplyDeleteI'll pass on 3D and wait for holograms.
ReplyDeleteyawn.... 3D...
ReplyDeletelooks like an Alienware panel....come on ODM's at least try a little harder

ReplyDelete1st line: "its", not "it's"
ReplyDeleteYep, totally agree. I'm always gaming at 89 degrees to my monitor.
ReplyDeleteOh wait, you've totally missed the point of this monitor.
Love the looks. The integrated speakers are a nice bonus. Just wish it had a higher resolution.
ReplyDeleteIntegrated speakers are a bonus? Can you explain why that is?
