LG Optimus 3D has dual-core 1GHz OMAP 4 CPU, video codecs up the wazoo

LG's been mighty stingy with details about its 3D smartphone, but some very promising ones have just trickled out of Barcelona ahead of Mobile World Congress -- in keeping with the company's theme of doubling everything, the LG Optimus 3D will ship with a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP 4 chip. Considering that we've seen that particular SOC drive three screens, we're guessing that a single 4.3-inch stereo display (yes, 4.3-inch is confirmed) will be old hat, and we've certainly seen the included PowerVR SGX540 graphics throw around some weight in many a Galaxy S. Raw specs aside, though, the Optimus 3D has a feature that we've been waiting on in Android for a while: LG says it will have "four times more video decoders than competing designs." Admittedly, that probably means it will still only recognize about eight video formats in total, but as long as we can play the vast majority of our anime music video library without re-encoding the lot, we'll promise to only grumble occasionally. Deal? PR after the break.

  4. I hope the quality of the Optimus 3D is better than the quality of the LG birds.
Birds score: 1 out of 3 (middle one in the above pic., the other 2 can be used as Angry Birds so we can throw them to some pigs...)

  9. This 3D thing absolutely stinks of fad. There is no need for 3D on a phone, nor do i have any desire to watch a movie with glasses strapped to my face. Until someone comes out with a cheap enough to be viable glasses free 3D solution, I'm out. I'll stick with a good 2D 1080p blu-ray with 5.1 surround for now. Suits my needs perfectly and doesn't break the bank. And when it comes to phones, iPhone 5 will tear all of these new superphones up purely because of the app quality. You could have a quad core Android device with 8GB of RAM and the apps, bugs and inconsistencies will still drag it back down the pecking order.

  10. If you were not so fanboy-blind you would see that this is glasses free 3d - similar as the new nintendo 3ds.

  11. I just hope your magical iPhone5 can leave 2007 behind it and have a better then 3.5" screen and a gazillion apps won't make up for the boring rows of app icons plus some folders. I never seem to install more then about 30 apps on my devcie so having more to choose from means SFA as long as i can find what i want an need the rest are of zero value to me, Of course we are not all the same but even iPhone fans are now saying they want more from thier devcie this time round or may look elsewhere.

  12. i think the key part of this comment is "nor do i have the desire". I do have the desire so yes, it is needed :-) Oh and isnt this 3d glasses free??? Kinda defeats your point altogether.

  14. Wonder how the Windows Phone 7/Nokia girls will look?

Or maybe it will be men with hairy chests?

  15. hopefully they look better than this... this year workforce cuts are giving such a bad image... phones itself look better than the ladies, before it used to be the opposite.
