So much for Verizon being the carrier of choice when it comes to accelerated Android updates, eh? Those who selected Big Red for their Galaxy S have been waiting on a Froyo build for what feels like an eternity, with our brethren to the north already enjoying the spoils -- things like Flash support and an integrated mobile hotspot. Of course, Samsung once promised that all Galaxy S phones (yeah, including the Fascinate) would receive Android 2.2 at some point in time, and while an official release is still eluding us, it looks as if the day is drawing ever closer. The fine folks over at Android Central simply couldn't wait any longer, and they're taken it upon themselves to wrap up the TouchWiz-infused EB01 build for all to enjoy. Naturally, you'll need to do a fair amount of hacking to get this up and running without anyone's consent, but all the details you're craving await you there in the source. Still unsure if it's worth the drive? Head on past the break for a quick video.

*Looks at my 2.1 Captivate*

*Throws captivate at the wall*
Fuck you, Samsung.
Actually... I was pretty jealous of the Captivate.... it got froyo way before the Fascinate. Go on xda and find yourself a froyo rom, like Perception 10.1. Seriously, the Fascinate was the last to get froyo; the captivate, epic 4g, and vibrant all got it before the fascinate.
ReplyDeleteAlso, why didn't engadget report this earlier? DL30 froyo rom for fascinate has been out for a while now, I'm currently running it. Battery life sucks, and it has some weird voicemail bug in the dialer, but other than that, runs super smooth. I'm waiting for the full official rom to be released to flash over DL30.
It absolutely infuriates me that Samsung has yet to push updates for the Galaxy S line. But they have the balls to start talking about the GS II and GTab II. Fuckers.
ReplyDeleteHere's an idea Samsung, WHY DON'T YOU SUPPORT THE CUSTOMERS THAT HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT YOUR HARDWARE? It's really becoming a joke. Scratch that, it HAS become a joke. So much so that I really can't see ever buying another Samsung product. If you can't fulfill your promises with the Galaxy S, what makes anyone think you'll do it for any of your other products in the future?
Agreed. I have the epic and I hate that I had to root/rom it to get the flash support. Google puts out these updates and gives them to the manufacturers in a timely mannor... what's the problem?
ReplyDeleteoh jeez, we gotta get touchwiz working on this. give me a break. give me the update then release a seperate samsung update for your touchwiz and other bloated crap.
people will smash android for this, but it's not googles fault... the only thing I blame them for is actually leaving it up to the carriers and manufacturers to release the updates.
see i could see the update from the picture, but there appears to be quite a lot of glare coming off of it..
ReplyDeleteSamsung hasn't released ANY Froyo updates to ANY of the US-Carrier Galaxy S phones. This isn't just a Verizon problem. I will never buy another samsung phone again. The reason they're doing this is that they want the carriers to pay them to provide updates, which is a ridiculous demand. In the end the consumers lose.
ReplyDeleteI've rooted and installed Dorian's rom on my captivate. It now scores as fast as the Nexus S in the Quadrant benchmark, which is almost twice as fast as it was stock.
If i was a major carrier i'd hire some people from XDA to build the roms, just as a fuck you to Samsung xD
ReplyDeleteThat's the reason iOS is on top of all this softwares, customers are left alone, lame updates and support.
ReplyDeleteYou're comparing ONE line of phones from ONE company to the plethora of Android phones from a dozen or more companies? Of course the iphone is internally consistent. Its one platform controlled by one company. Of course, that's also the ONLY benefit the iphone has.
ReplyDeleteThe manufacturers are in a world they aren't prepared to deal with. They were forced into a world of upgrading older devices with newer software and they can't do it efficiency. Too many tweeks and differences to keep up.
ReplyDeleteSo my manufacturers and carriers are struggling with 2.2, haven't thought about gingerbread and rumor has it 2.4 will be announced in April.
Something has got to give.
've just flashed a 2.3 rom on my G2, gotta love the openess of HTC phones
ReplyDeleteI love Sense UI and the design of HTC phones, but the Galaxy S had one major feature that no other Android phone has- insane codec support. With mVideoPlayer, I can watch 720p mkv files with embedded soft subs (and for people that say 720p is useless on such a small screen, you're both right and wrong. It's not useless cause 720p encodes are much higher quality, which means that when I watch it on the phone, there's no artifacting, unlike lower quality xVid encodes. However, a good h.264 dvd encode will do just as well.). That, coupled with the great music player and screen, makes for one hell of a PMP. If it wasn't for that one feature, I would've instantly sprung for a HTC phone.
ReplyDeletegotta love bugs and unofficial drivers. but seriously, how do phones like the nexus one and G2 not have the official 2.3 yet? total bs.

ReplyDeleteBloatware is one of the main reasons I'm Rooted. Smh @ US carriers.
One thing I hate about the phone is the preinstalled icons which i cannot delete. My son clicked on the stupid tetris icon and it downloaded the games and I got charged 7 dollars for something i dont want and play.
ReplyDeleteYou deserve to have your money taken from you if you hate tetris. Tetris is the best game ever made.
ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't have been charged. It's still free. Obviously you're mistaken. I downloaded Tetris from the shortcut yesterday. To be charged he we have to have logged into your paypal account.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't call it shitty as mine is alright, though it's not better than the Droid X in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool, but it's been 8 MONTHS since Froyo was available. Why do these carriers have so much control over this stuff?
