WSJ corroborates the mini-iPhone, says Apple may make MobileMe free (update: 'edge-to-edge' screen)

The Wall Street Journal has weighed in on rumors of Apple's smaller iPhone, and citing "people familiar with the matter" the publication says that the rumors are likely true. One such familiar person reportedly saw a device half the size of the iPhone 4, bearing the codename "N97," and said that the handset will be only about half the size of the original, and at only around half the price too. Amazingly, those anonymous sources continued to divulge information, expressing the idea that Apple could finally make its MobileMe cloud service suite free, and that it just might be the platform from which Apple could finally launch a streaming music platform and lessen the need for all those gigabytes of flash storage in your pocket. We'll let you know if or when any of that happens, okay?

Update: The WSJ's source proved even more talkative after getting an eyeful of the Samsung and Sony announcements this morn; the publication's article has been updated to read that the device is "signifcantly lighter" than the iPhone 4, has an "edge-to-edge" touchscreen, and "voice-based navigation" of some sort.

  1. This would actually correspond perfectly with the speculation that Apple would incorporate multitouch gestures in the next iPhone. I could see them taking away the home button and the bezel thus reducing the size yet retaining the screen size which is now edge to edge.

  2. I strongly disbelieve Apple will be making a cheaper iPhone that doesn’t do anything better except have a better price for the same reason they were dissing notebooks saying they were “just cheap computers” that have no reason for being.

but, in the other sides, I do hope Apple would luanched a cheap iphone. If so, I could buy one also. lol. ^.^
Indeed, I’m a movie lover, so I get most of the movies on my iPhone through ifunia iphone converter. I think other will do the same once they try it and realize it is the perfect phone:-)

Im just going to ask, in spite of pride, is this supposedly small iPhone going the be the next iphone that we read earlier was going to have the A5 chip? Or is it a different matter entirely?

  4. It's a different device entirely, maybe. It's all speculation, but what they're talking about here is not the iPhone 5.

  7. Don't they say this every week about every Apple product? Every few days there's a report somewhere where someone goes "oh there's going to be a smaller iPod/iPhone/iPad/iMac/Macbook/iDong next Thursday."

  8. hey should totally make an iPad Nano. 4" would be about the perfect size.

  9. Half the size would be stupid. The iPhone is already a small sized phone. An edge to edge touchscreen would be nice though. They also really need to update their built in maps and youtube apps.

  10. So basically what I'm getting from this is that this new iPhone mini is going to be a cheaper version of the iPhone with most likely a single core processor, a non-retina display (which Apple can get away with since the iPad 2 won't have a retina display either) and screen that almost covers the entire front of the device.

In other words it's a toy for parents to give their kids who have been whining about wanting an iPhone. Any reasonable adult is going to buy the real thing.
